Scenes from the Day Spike Came Home

A photo shoot with my niece the day her family’s dog, Spike, returned after he’d been missing a few days last summer.

One day last summer when my sister and her family were away from their house for a few hours, one of their dogs, Spike, escaped. It was a harrowing few days until Spike showed up on their doorstep early that Sunday morning. My niece and I decided to do a photo shoot to commemorate Spike’s return. Of course, I managed to get a few of my niece on her own too 😉

{Just Married} Kayla + Tony

The wedding invitations dubbed the upcoming nuptials of Kayla and Tony as “Best Day Ever,” and I can’t disagree with that!

Firstly, there are a couple of things to know:

  • I have traveled to different states to photograph weddings before, this is my first time going out of the country for a wedding! Kayla and Tony live in London, so that’s where their wedding took place.  Also, it was my first time attending a wedding in England, full stop. So cool!
  • I shot the whole thing on film. As much of a film enthusiast as I am, digital is usually my medium of choice for weddings. Not this time though. Between the fact that I don’t normally take digital cameras with me when I travel to England, and the fact that I just felt as if Kayla and Tony’s wedding would best be captured on film, well…these are all film photos!

Kayla and Tony were married at the beautiful Islington Town Hall in London. There were readings by some of the happy couple’s nearest and dearest, music sung with lilting vocals and ukelele accompiament by a talented friend of Kayla’s, and even a few laughs during the ceremony (such as when the ring bearer decided he wanted his grandfather, Tony’s brother and best man, to give the rings to the bride and groom during the exchanging of the rings portion of the ceremony. Hilarious!)

The wedding was 100% true to who Kayla and Tony are (which is to say: lovely individuals!) Probably because the amazing Kayla did it all! From the wedding cake to the bouquets and floral arrangements, it was all Kayla! Not to mention the design of the invitations, too!

Though the wedding was in a grand room, it felt like a very intimate setting due to the warmth and love felt by everyone in attendance.

Seriously. SO ADORABLE!

The happiest of couples!

Tony, Kayla, and Baxter make a beautiful little family, don’t you agree??

Seeing a bride and groom walking from the town hall to the restaurant where the reception was being held gave onlookers a something to smile about!

In lieu of the guestbook, guests signed little wooden hearts and placed them in a keepsake frame

Super candid, but I love this one of the newlyweds, their little guy, and Kayla’s mom

They sure did!

Kayla and Tony’s wedding day was marvelous. You can just see that those two ADORE one another, and really, I could see how much their union meant to all their guests on that day. Much love to ya’ll!

{Retrochrome}

This summer, I was given a couple of rolls of FPP Retrochrome by a Twitter friend. I couldn’t wait to try it out!

What is Retrochrome? From the Film Photography Project website:

RetroChrome is government surplus Eastman Ektachrome. Made for industrial and governmental applications…

It is meant to be shot as positive film (slide film,) but of course I had my Retrochrome cross-processed! As you can see, the results were largely yellow and green. I like it though! A lot. Besides, most of this roll was shot on a night I would call “one enchanted evening,” when I had a girls’ night out in Midtown Memphis, so I loved the feel the Retrochrome gave those photos.

My mother made an appointment for her THIRD tattoo…

One of the photos I took to docuaiment my friend Kayla’s wedding invitations. I have more shots of the invites taken on film that WASN’T yellow!

{Redscale Zoo}

I recently made some DIY redscale film with Fuji Superia 400 that expired in 2007 (thrift shop film!) The majority of that roll was shot at the Memphis Zoo this summer, and I honestly am in love with the results. I like to shoot my redscale film at a much lower film speed than is indicated on the film box so I get more muted tones than deep reds and oranges. I guess the age of this roll of film meant it was harder to get enough exposure to keep the shots from going red and orange, but I feel it really worked in this scenario.

My new favorite redscale photo
